We've Got it Wired
Serving Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and surrounding areas in New Jersey for over 25 years
Homes built between 1965 and 1972 may have aluminum wiring.
If the aluminum wiring is 12 awg and not 14 awg aluminum wire then the NEC
today still allows this aluminum wiring to be installed allowed by the current
2002 NEC rules. However aluminum wiring has taken a rather rough beating in
reputation since the installation of aluminum wiring in the 70's appeared in the
electrical field.
When this aluminum wiring was installed in the 70's the devices (switches and
receptacles and wire nuts) were not as compatible with this aluminum wiring as
we thought. This incompatibility of this equipment created a steady experience
of loose connections that caused wires to heat and become damaged at the
connections to these less compatible devices and connections made.
Now what to do with the wiring installed in the 70's that had inadequately
compatible devices and connections is the question and is it safe. In my opinion
"NO" aluminum wiring is safe if installed in the 70's. However this aluminum
wiring if 12 awg or larger can be made safer without rewiring your home.
If you wish to rewire your home in copper that is fine if you have the money
and time to do so. Most people don't nor will not have the money to do such a
project.
If you wish to use your aluminum wiring that was installed in the 70's and want
to make it safer to use then give us a call for a free estimate.
